It was super fan experience. You have just 5 days to create a real product. You gather with people you've never worked before. There are no limits, but your product should be useful for company or people.

At the beginning, I was a bit sceptic, to be honest. I though I can just vast time. But it was the most interesting project at Wix. It was a real start-up environment I miss sometimes working at big company.

You don't have time on dozen frameworks, reviews and talks. You have just a team and their expertise.

Challenge

The real challenge was time. Do you think 5 days to design and develop something is not enough? I think time limits just help you to achieve goals and beat competitors.

The second challenge was to cooperate with new people. But we did great, because Wix people are great!

Problem

As a real start-up we decided to solve our own problem. Everyone faced with interview process. And everyone feel stress during it. We tried to improve candidates experience and found such problems:

1. People often don't understand the full picture of interview process, because at Wix it's huge and complex. Some people don't know how long it would take to finish all steps.

2. Waiting is frustrating. If you don't know what's happening after each phase of interview, you get stressed.

Data

For the last 2 years Wix hired 4000+ of people. To do so company had to interview 400 000+ of candidates. It's ~17 500 people per month.

From a stats below we can see, that even on the last step with offer, Wix loose ~14% of candidates.

User voice

First part of the 1 day I spend talking with users. I talked with 6 people to validate our ideas. And get such feedback:

"To understand what will be the next step is missing. And I didn't know that the full process would be so long. I just want to understand how much I need to spend time on a full journey."

"Fast process, faster decision after each step, more transparent communication if we are moving on, more detailed feedback on each step."

"You get feedback and clear further steps. You clearly understand the timeline. Could give more context about the person, who will interview you on the next step (position in the company etc)."

"I was waiting for the final decision more than 1 month. I even accepted offer from other company. But when got Wix one, decided to join Wix."

"I was waiting a response for a long period of time. It’s a bit nervous. And I managed to  send my test task to a wrong email."

Ideation

In the second part of the date, we were brainstorming ideas together with the team. We found examples of candidate dashboards of such big tech as Meta and Google. We analyzed feedback from interviews and came up with the first wireframe:

Visual design

The first day was over. We had good results. After a good sleep, with a fresh mind, I took one day to work on design and experience.

My main idea was to rotate steps into vertical layout to give it more space. It helped me to organize all useful information and also let me control the important information though interactions.

Also I was focused on step status, to solve the main user pain.
In the evening I presented my ideas to the team:

I got a good feedback form team. And we agreed to build it. Devs started working on implementation. And I had some time to finalize all user scenarios.

Results

Our project won the third place worldwide through the 221 teams. It was fantastic! And I think we could even win, but 1 and 2 places were solving better business needs. Also we won People's Choice Award.

Unfortunately 2022 is not the best year to start internal human resources projects. But crysis will not be forever. And we hope to come back to this idea.

We would like to improve such metrics with our product:

  • Candidates experience (NPS)

  • % Conversion to the next step

  • Time to close the position

  • % users interacted with the widget

  • Promote open positions to the candidates, that failed

Also we have a place to improve business:

  • Promote open positions to the candidates, that failed

  • Recruiter admin panel
